Overview

What it is

Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. A licensed provider may prescribe it as part of a sexual wellness program after reviewing your symptoms, medications and health history.

This medication is compounded. It is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for an individual patient based on a prescription. Compounded medications are not FDA approved, which means the FDA has not evaluated their safety, effectiveness or quality.

Mechanism

How it works

Sildenafil blocks an enzyme called PDE5. Blocking it helps blood vessels relax and widen, which increases blood flow. It works in response to sexual stimulation and does not cause arousal on its own.

Your provider determines the dose and how it should be used, and may adjust it based on how you respond.

The program

What to expect

Your provider will review your health history, blood pressure and every medication you take before prescribing. Your provider will tell you how much to use and when, and may change the plan over time.

Individual responses vary, and results are not guaranteed.

Candidacy

Who it is for

Whether sildenafil is appropriate for you is a decision made by a licensed provider based on your symptoms, examination and health history. It is not appropriate for everyone, including people who take nitrate medications and people with certain heart conditions.

Sexual health concerns can have many causes, including heart health, diabetes, hormone levels and medications. Your provider will evaluate the full picture.

Tolerability

Side effects

Commonly reported side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, upset stomach, dizziness and changes in vision such as a blue tint or sensitivity to light.

Serious risks include a drop in blood pressure, especially when combined with nitrates or certain other medications; an erection that lasts more than four hours (priapism); sudden vision loss in one or both eyes; and sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, an erection lasting more than four hours, or any sudden change in vision or hearing.
